I am interested in social and political philosophy. My work has focused primarily on the ethics of immigration, in particular at the intersection of state regulation of immigration and moral claims migrants might have against the state. I have published papers dealing with whether the state has a right to exclude prospective immigrants and the extent to which the state has a right to deport unauthorized immigrants. I am increasingly interested in political disobedience, social ontology, and group moral agency. I am currently working on projects that examine the nature and ethics of political rioting, that use conceptual tools from social ontology to better understand injustices unauthorized immigrants face, and whether group agents should be granted moral rights and whether group agents can trust and be trusted. See my works in progress for more details!
I am currently a PhD candidate at Duke University. I am also a Major in the United States Army. I taught introductory Ethics (with special emphasis on Just War Theory) at the United States Military Academy (USMA) from 2017-2020 as a junior rotating military faculty member. I received my M.A. in Philosophy from Tufts University in 2017. I have been selected to return to USMA as an Academy Professor upon completion of my program here at Duke, in which capacity I will be able to serve for the remainder of my Army career.
I am married to my high school sweetheart, Lyndsay, and we have two children, Chloe (8) and Owen (4). In my free time I enjoy traveling with my family, eating and drinking way too much good food and wine, exploring coffee shops and book stores, hiking, playing board games and card games with Lyndsay after the kids go to bed, reading, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
